According to my dictionary, stress is a mentally or emotionally upsetting condition that affects physical health, and which occurs in response to external influences.

It s definitely NOT a good thing to suffer from.

Stress is commonly caused by a mixture of life events, environmental conditions and especially by our relationships with the other people around us:-

Life Events that Cause Stress:-

  • Divorce or Separation
  • Death of a loved one
  • Starting a new job
  • Losing our job
  • Moving house
  • Children leaving home

Stressful Environmental Conditions:-

  • Being too hot or cold
  • Having too much to do
  • Trying to deal with problems we can’t solve

Stressful Relationships:-

  • Being in a problematic relationship
  • Working for a difficult boss
  • Having problems with our children
  • Being affected by people who annoy us or remind us of something unpleasant.

What Happens When We Suffer From Stress

Short term:- When we suffer from stress, our body directs blood to the heart and mind in order to help us deal with whatever is troubling us. Heart rate increases. Glycogen stored in the muscles is broken down to produce glucose. The glucose is used to help us respond to the cause of our stress. We suffer from muscular tension throughout our body, and particularly in the neck and shoulders.

We tend to suffer from breathlessness, dry mouth, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, difficulty in concentrating, memory disturbances, abdominal discomfort, depression and outbursts of anger.

Long term effects of stress:- We can suffer from chronic headaches, anxieties, mood swings, weight loss or weight gain, memory disturbance and sleeplessness, decreased sex drive, worsening of allergies such as asthma and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

Needless to say, suffering from excess stress is a highly undesirable state to be in. And unless it is dealt with, things can only get worse.

But there is an answer…  and that is to have a massage.

There are many benefits to having a massage, and as if to emphasise the point, the New York Times recently published an article claiming that Massage Benefits Are More Than Skin Deep.

A massage session will definitely provide an easy, enjoyable and effective way to get you out of the downward stress cycle.

If you are suffering from stress – get a massage. Or better still, get yourself a course of massage treatments.
